GCSE past paper question on Generators - total 8 marks.
Transformers are made of a primary coil of insulated wire and a secondary coil of insulated wire wrapped around an Iron core.
Step up transformers greater number of coils are on the secondary coil compared to the primary coil. This causes the potential difference to increase and the current to decrease in the secondary coil.
Step down transformers – greater number of coils in the primary coil compared to secondary. This causes the potential difference to decrease and the current to increase in the secondary coil.
Complete the task on the companion sheet. Can you describe the role of a transformer in a single sentence?
Alternating current in the primary coil induces an alternating magnetic field in the core.
This is transferred across the core to the secondary coil where a alternating current is induced in the secondary coil and a potential difference is induced.
The wire must be insulated for the magnetic field to be induced
Vp = Potential difference on the primary coil
Vs = Potential difference on the secondary coil
Np = Number of turns of wire on the primary coil
Ns = Number of turns on the seconday coil
Label the parts of the transformer equation giving units where needed.
Then use the wall method to rearrange the formula to make each of the 4 part the subject.
Complete the table on the companion sheet using the equations you have just rearranged.
