Transformers increase / decrease PD and current by using the electromagnetic induction. The power in is the same as the power out. By connecting different coils of wire together with an iron core, the power stays the same but the PD and Current can changes.
In this example, the PD is increases as there are more turns of wire on the secondary coil. Using P=IV, if P is constant, increasing V must reduce I. Its this reduction in current that reduces energy loss in the cable
