In 1841, Ignaz Semmelweiss started to record the mortality rates (numbers of deaths) across wards in his hospital.
The first clinic was staffed by Doctors where performed autopsies (post mortems) and midwives.
The second clinic was staffed solely by the midwives and no doctors at all.
He intervened in 1847 and asked the doctors to start washing their hands before delivering babies.
Here is a graph of his results of his study which continued until 1850.
On your companion sheet, answer the following questions.
Which clinic had the higher mortality rates?
What was the difference between how the clinics were run?
What did Doctors do that midwives did not?
What effect did washing hands have on the mortality rates?
What conclusion can you draw from this data?
